Have you ever purchased a swaggy piece of clothing from a mega-thrift store, but were too ashamed to admit where it came from -- say, the Salvation Army, Value Village (Village des Valeurs), a local church sale, or even a garage sale? And when you tell people where you picked it up, do they ever respond: Ewww, someone's worn that before?!? Gross!
This blog offers strategies and ideas to help you transform your look into something INCREDIBLE while shopping at unconventional thrift stores (with ugly depressing exteriors), urging you to embrace a more eco-friendly, eccentric -- and not to mention wallet-friendly -- attitude. Although browsing in those quirky vintage boutiques is always fun, we much prefer looking there for inspiration. Besides, we've always had a sneaking suspicion that they get their stock from these "unhip" second-hand warehouses and mark up the prices 50% (we're not gonna name names here...)
We came up with this idea one night while strolling through the winding streets of Montreal's Old Port, as we were discussing our latest fashion finds. Quickly, we realized that we had never found any blogs, forums or websites about these repositories, which cater to all kinds of people, from immigrants to hipsters to
middle-class penny-saving (ahem... cheap) parents (I love you mom!).
The best part of shopping at these kinds of places is the hunt. No duh, humans evolved into what they are today partly because of their ability to hunt food. It's in our genes. For all you fashionistas, looking awesome might fall into this same category: "the essential." So, at these mega-stores we hunt fashion and it's
absolutely thrilling. To the newbie, it might seem completely over-whelming at first, but we're here to offer you an exclusive treasure map.
We also want to hear you brag! We want to see the amazing outfits you find, to hear about where you found them and to know how much you spent! Share with us. Make others jealous.
Bottom line: If you're socially and environmentally conscious, fashionable, on a budget, love the thrill of
the hunt, and believe in reusing, recycling, swapping and upcycling - it's our pleasure to meet you!
